Shiraito Falls is located in the well-known hot spring district of Jozankei, a popular retreat area near Sapporo. Although small in size, the waterfall holds a unique charm that makes it a quiet highlight of the area.
The name “Shiraito” means “White Thread,” inspired by the way the water gently flows down the rock face in thin, elegant strands, resembling hanging silk threads. When sunlight touches the falling water, it creates a soft shimmer, adding to the serene and almost poetic atmosphere. It is an ideal spot for a peaceful walk, quiet reflection, and nature photography.
In mid to late October, the surrounding forest transforms into brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold, creating a striking contrast against the white streams of water. During winter, parts of the waterfall freeze into delicate natural ice formations, giving the scenery a magical, storybook-like appearance.
Nearby stands the historic Jozankei Hydroelectric Power Plant, the oldest hydroelectric plant in Hokkaido, adding historical depth to the visit. Visitors can also walk to Futami Tsuri-bashi, the iconic red suspension bridge spanning the valley, and continue along the scenic Kappa Trail, which connects several attractions throughout the Jozankei area.

From Sapporo
- Take the Jozankei Line bus or the Kappa Liner (reservation required) from Sapporo Station to “Jozankei (定山渓).” The journey takes approximately 60–70 minutes.
From the bus stop
- Walk about 5–10 minutes toward the hydroelectric power plant. The path is flat, clearly signposted, and suitable for visitors of all ages.
